ABOUT.

Design Cultures & Creativity (DCC) is a program for makers and thinkers who investigate the digital age through interdisciplinary design. DCC fosters an open, collaborative, and social environment that encourages students to explore the relationship between emerging media, society, and creative practices. We are passionate about emerging technologies and their impact on the world; but even more importantly, how our contributions to emerging technologies can change the world. DCC students engage in research and collaborative projects on topics as varied as identity, connectivity, social justice, art, design, and all things creative in an era when digital media links us on a scale unprecedented in human history.

DCC encourages students to think beyond disciplinary boundaries and approach problems from multiple perspectives by providing them with the resources to tackle any issue or goal they have. Our courses, lab space, and workshops provide spaces for exploration, for thinking through ideas, and experimenting with the process of building, designing, and creating in the digital age. DCC values inclusivity and aims to cultivate lifelong learners who are critically engaged thinkers. Our students will become the makers and doers of tomorrow, able to expand our notions of human potential, not merely technologically but also socially and creatively.

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

LILYBELLE DAVIS, BETA CLASS, ECONOMICS MAJOR
"Through this program, the curriculum doesn't end as you walk outside the classroom. The talent within DCC's students encourages constant learning and brainstorming. I became so close with my peers in the Beta class because we not only learned together, but we also grew together. DCC really breaks down the barriers associated with tech and allows anyone to learn and develop useful digital skills. In DCC, I challenged myself to work with the CS majors, learn Photoshop and HTML. By doing that, I strengthened my Economics major in away that no other program could have done."

BRYANT O'BRIEN, BETA CLASS, INFORMATION SYSTEMS MAJOR
"DCC is a diverse program that fundamentally challenges the modern definition of technology. DCC looks to stretch your mental confinements on the uses of technology and social media by introducing foreign projects and assignments with technology. For example, creating grids of surveillance cameras, developing and tweeting with a certain hashtag for educational/classroom purposes. For current and future students, enjoy your time around some of the most creative and imaginative faculty, students, and curriculum on campus. It is very different from the majority of other programs on campus."

ALEXIS ANTHONY, BETA CLASS, PUBLIC RELATIONS MAJOR
"DCC is unlike most other honors programs. We have open-ended projects wherein we can take any idea we have and develop it. Thanks to DCC and some of my classes the past few years, I have developed an interest in multimedia production. I like taking and editing photos, as well as producing short videos and audio clips. I've even gotten into website design and development. For current and potential DCC students, my advice is to be creative. Take a leap. If there is anything you've always wanted to do -- DO IT. DCC provides the resources and support to make that happen."

BEENA RAGHAVENDRAN, BETA CLASS, JOURNALISM AND GOVERNMENT & POLITICS DOUBLE MAJOR
"DCC is a smorgasbord of multidisciplinary majors. It works because it integrates each major's strengths to form strong collaborative projects and thinking beyond the realm of just a major or discipline of study. I picked DCC to understand the intersections of technology with journalism, and it has helped me understand the potential of digital impact on the media world. Bringing together such a diversity of majors and backgrounds, DCC becomes a family of support, always helpful and always interested to further our understanding of the digital world."
